How Florida Calculates Child Support
Florida uses an income-shares model under Florida Statute 61.30. The basic steps are:
- Determine each parent’s net monthly income (gross income minus taxes, mandatory deductions)
- Combine both incomes to find the combined net income
- Look up the minimum child support need from the guidelines schedule based on combined income and number of children
- Each parent’s share is proportional to their percentage of the combined income
- Add healthcare and childcare costs, split proportionally
- Adjust for the overnight timesharing schedule — more overnights with the paying parent reduces the obligation
The court can deviate from the guidelines by up to 5% without written findings, or more with specific written justification. An experienced family law attorney ensures all deductions and adjustments are properly calculated.
